He is a former Commissioner for Technology Development in Imo State with over 25 years of senior executive experience and a varied career in the public and private sectors.
Hon. Mekam K. Mgbenwelu studied at the University of Greenwich, City University, and University of Westminster all in the United Kingdom.
His Academic background includes (BA Hons) Political Economy, (MSc.,) Information Management, and (MBA) in Business Administration. In addition to formal courses of study, Hon Mekam K. Mgbenwelu has studied several short courses both locally and internationally.
He has held several positions in the Presidency, Abuja where has served as a Consultant to the Federal Government of Nigeria in the Power Sector Reform Programme under the leadership of Prof. Barth Nnaji-led Presidential Task Force on Power (PTFP).
Hon. Mekam also led the SURE-P team on Project Monitoring and Evaluation, under the Chairmanship of Dr. Christopher Kolade in the Presidency, Abuja.
He was a pioneer staff Microsoft Corporation in Nigeria where he led the Marketing and Intellectual Property Compliance Team. Mekam has extensive work experience in several countries in Sub-Saharan Africa namely Ghana, Benin Republic, Botswana, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa.
An avid sportsman, he enjoys Reading, Hiking, and Scrabble. He is a member of several professional associations including the Nigerian Institute of Management and the Nigerian Association of Evaluators. He is married with two sons.
Hon. Mekam is passionate about human capacity development and is committed to the use of technology to create wealth and opportunities for the youth.
